If you're a Brooklyn veteran who is disabled or who has mobility issues due to combat OR an injury, medical condition, or age, the Home Help for Heroes Program is a grant designed to help you continue to live in your home or apartment independently. These grants will be given to income-eligible Brooklyn veterans who are:
homeowners
renters
residents in a home they don't own or rent, such as a family home
Grant funds may be used for modifications such as a ramp, lift, or roll-in shower; door widening; or other alterations to make the home more accessible to the veteran.
Applicant's household must be at or below 120% of AMI. (Go here for a chart showing AMI income limits by household size. Scroll to the right to see 120% AMI limits.) Conditions apply; however, the veteran's disability does not have to be combat-related and may be due to age, serious illness, infirmity, injury, or an accident.
If the veteran does not own the property, he or she must have the permission of the property owner before modifications can be made.
