❖ Full-Time Openings for NYS Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologists and Administrative Staff The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has openings for New York State Licensed clinical laboratory technologists and administrative staff for immediate hire.


The DOHMH is expanding its laboratory surge capacity and hiring licensed technologists and resolution staff to assist with diagnosis of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).


Technologists will perform clinical testing for SARS-CoV-2, and concentrate on molecular techniques for the detection of viral RNA, such as nucleic acid extraction and PCR. Lab duties will also extend to preparing master mix and performing quality control procedures of reagents and instruments. Administrative staff will perform tasks such as inventory maintenance.


The New York City Public Health Laboratory (PHL) provides a wide variety of clinical and environmental laboratory testing services. The PHL performs testing on more than 200,000 specimens each year and serves as one of the first lines of defense when responding to outbreaks in New York City. In recent years, the PHL has provided emergency response and surge testing for H1N1, Ebola, Hepatitis A, Legionnaire’s Disease, Zika virus, and measles. The NYC Public Health Laboratory is divided into three different, but equally important laboratory sections: Microbiology, Virology, and Environmental Sciences and Safety.


And overseeing all of the PHL laboratory sections is the Quality Management unit. As one of the largest public health agencies in the world, with over 200 years of leadership in the field, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is committed to protecting and promoting the health of 8 million diverse New Yorkers.


Primary Goals of the New York City Public Health Laboratory:

• To provide laboratory information needed by partners and New Yorkers for outbreak investigations and public health responses

• To use state of the art technology and testing methods to rapidly and accurately provide results necessary for effective public health intervention

• To maintain efficient and active communications between DOHMH and community partners in order for critical information to reach intended recipients rapidly and accurately

Associate Lab Microbiologist

• New York State clinical license required

• Duties: ▪ Serve as testing supervisor and verify results ▪ Preparation of reagents for testing

Lab Microbiologist

Administrative Staff

▪ Data entry and catalog samples/specimens

▪ Send/receive faxes/e-mails

▪ Contact providers to obtain missing information required for sample/specimen testing

▪ Communicate with leadership on emerging issues

Lab Associate

• Duties:

▪ Testing - Process specimens (i.e, aliquoting, centrifugation, label printing)

▪ Accessioning - Receive specimens (data entry, scanning, IATA packaging & shipping, transport of specimens to testing lab, filling out data logs)

• Annual salary beginning at $42,000
