Rent Freeze and Property Tax Help (November)

November is Veterans Month, so the NYC Department of Finance is holding benefits fairs to help homeowners who are veterans, unremarried surviving spouses of veterans, and Gold Star Parents to apply for all property tax exemptions for which they may be eligible in order to reduce their property taxes. Exemptions, which lower your property taxes just like they do for income taxes, are available to homeowners whose income is less than $84,000 per year (called the STAR Exemption). There is also an Enhanced START Exemption for seniors 65 or older whose income is no more than $58,399. Additional exemptions are also available to veterans, seniors, clergy, and people with disabilities.

Renters who fall into these categories may also apply at these events for the Senior Rent Freeze or the Disabled Rent Freeze, if eligible.

Restrictions apply. See the flyers below for dates, times, and locations of these events as well as other details, including additional exemptions for which homeowners and renters may be eligible.

You do not have to be a veteran, unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran, or a Gold Star Parent to receive assistance at these events.

Representatives from other agencies and organizations (including NHS Brooklyn at the 11/7 and 11/20 events in Brooklyn and the 11/14 event in Manhattan) will also be on hand to share info about their services.
